What Is a Wedding Celebrant? (And the Human Need for Ceremony)
Since the beginning of time, people have gathered to witness life's biggest moments.
Births. Deaths. Harvests. Coming of age. Weddings. Across every culture and every corner of the world, we've always marked the moments that change us. We gather the people we love, we tell stories, we make promises, we bear witness to a new chapter beginning. It's one of the oldest things we do as humans.
A wedding ceremony is part of that tradition.
Not because it's a legal requirement, but because standing up in front of the people who know and love you and saying, "This is the person I've chosen," is a profoundly human thing to do. Which brings us to the question I get asked almost every week...
What actually is a wedding celebrant?
The simplest answer is this: a celebrant writes and leads a wedding ceremony that is entirely about you.
Unlike a registrar, who is there to carry out the legal marriage using prescribed wording, an independent celebrant has complete freedom to create a ceremony from scratch. We take the time to get to know you properly, write a ceremony that's unique to your relationship and deliver it in a way that feels natural, engaging and completely personal….No wondering if the couple getting married at 11am heard exactly the same words.
Instead, your ceremony becomes something your guests couldn't imagine happening for anybody else.
If you're still deciding between a celebrant and a registrar, I've written a more detailed guide on Celebrant vs Registrar: What's the Difference?, but in many ways it comes down to this…
One focuses on the legalities, the other focuses on the experience.
And if I'm honest, I think we've underestimated just how important that experience is.
For years, weddings have become bigger and bigger productions. Couples spend months choosing the perfect venue, tasting menus, debating table plans, comparing DJs and wondering whether they really need a neon sign. Somewhere along the way, the ceremony—the very reason everyone has gathered—can become the shortest part of the day and, too often, the part people expect to simply sit through.
I think that's a real shame. Because the ceremony isn't the bit before the celebration. It is the celebration.
It's the only point in the day where every single person you love is in the same place, for the same reason. Before the champagne starts flowing, before everyone scatters to catch up with old friends, before the dance floor opens, there's one precious hour where everyone is completely present. That's extraordinary when you stop and think about it.
If you've persuaded your favourite people to travel from across the country—or across the world—to be with you, surely that moment deserves more than a standard script. It deserves your full, imperfect, quirky, story.
That's where I come in.
Before becoming a celebrant, I spent nearly twenty years as a singer-songwriter, performing everywhere from intimate wine bars to festival crowds and Wembley arena. Looking back, I realise those years taught me far more than how to write songs or perform on stage.
They taught me how to hold a room. How to find the rhythm in a story. How to know when people need to laugh, when they need a pause, and when the simplest sentence carries the greatest weight.
Writing a ceremony isn't so different from writing a song.
You're listening carefully for what makes this relationship unlike any other. You're looking for the tiny details that reveal who two people really are: the story they tell every dinner party, the habit that secretly drives the other mad, the quiet act of kindness that probably goes unnoticed by everyone except the person receiving it. Those details are where love lives.
They're also what make guests lean forward, laugh, wipe away tears and think, "I've never heard that before."
That's why I called my business Love Lines.
Because every relationship has its own language and its own collection of sacred, hilarious and poignant stories that deserve to be told & celebrated. Sometimes, quite literally, with music.
Alongside writing ceremonies, I also offer bespoke songwriting for couples who want something truly one of a kind. Whether it's an original song for your aisle walk, your first dance or simply a deeply personal gift to each other, it's another way of capturing your story in a form you'll keep long after the wedding day is over.
People often ask me where they should invest their wedding budget.
The flowers will be beautiful. The food will be delicious. The band will (hopefully!) keep everyone dancing until midnight.
But the ceremony is the reason all of those things are happening. It's the one part of the day that every single guest experiences together. And it's the part they'll still talk about years later if it made them laugh, cry or see the two of you in a new light.
It's the moment your marriage begins. So I think it deserves to be the beating heart of the day.
Because when everything else has been packed away, it's the promises you made, the stories you shared and the feeling in the room that people carry home with them.
And that, to me, is what a celebrant is really there to create.
If storytelling matters to you and your partner, let’s talk!
