Planning an Asylum Chapel Wedding? I would Love to Tell Your Story
There are some pretty alternative and truly unique wedding venues in London that take your breath away. The Asylum Chapel is one of them.
I was lucky enough to be invited for a private tour recently and was spellbound - imagining where a couple would stand to exchange their vows, where I'd pause while telling the story of how they met, and how the afternoon light would fall through those extraordinary stain glass cracked windows, as everyone quietly held their breath before the first kiss.
That's probably the biggest compliment I can pay any wedding venue.
It made me think about the emotion a space evokes, rather than logistics.
Why is the Asylum Chapel one of London's most sought-after wedding venues?
If you've found yourself searching for alternative wedding venues or unique wedding venues in London you probably will have stumbled across the infamous Asylum Chapel. It has a compelling narrative and a palpable energy when you walk in, so I completely understand why you may have landed on it as your dream wedding space.
There really isn't another place quite like it.
Originally built in the nineteenth century as part of Caroline Gardens in Peckham, the chapel was badly damaged during the Second World War. Rather than restoring every crack, every scar and every flake of paint, much of that history has been lovingly preserved. The result is one of the most atmospheric wedding venues in London; somewhere that feels romantic, creative and quietly dramatic without ever feeling over-designed.
The beauty of the Asylum Chapel is that it doesn't need dressing up to become interesting. The building already has so much soul that even the simplest ceremony feels incredibly special. (I do recommend the candle backdrop though!)
Who books the Asylum Chapel?
As I wandered through the chapel, I found myself wondering about the couples who choose to get married here.
I don't imagine they're looking for the biggest ballroom in London or the grandest staircase for photographs. I imagine they're storytellers, artists, film-makers, lovers of design. Or simply people who appreciate beautiful old buildings and places with a little bit of history behind them. Couples who care less about following wedding traditions for the sake of it and more about creating a day that genuinely feels authentic and atmospheric. The peeling paint, weathered walls and soft natural light aren't flaws to hide; they're exactly what makes the building so unforgettable.
One of the things I love about the Asylum Chapel is that it attracts couples who value the ceremony and put importance on it. As 9 times out of 10 they will be moving to a secondary venue for their reception, so they’ve selected a venue that can be the backdrop to that incredibly personal moment in time.
If you’re reading this nodding away, I have a feeling we'd probably get on.
A venue like this deserves a ceremony with just as much personality
As a London wedding celebrant, I look at every venue through the lens of storytelling, and the Asylum Chapel practically invites it.
A place with this much character deserves a ceremony that feels completely personal. It deserves vows that sound like the two of you and stories that make your guests laugh because they recognise you in every sentence. It deserves meaningful readings, live music and perhaps a symbolic ritual like a handfasting or candle ceremony that feels entirely natural within such an extraordinary space.
I've written about Wedding Ceremony Ritualsand How to Personalise Your Wedding Ceremony elsewhere because I genuinely believe your ceremony should be the emotional heart of your day. If you've chosen somewhere as special as the Asylum Chapel, it seems a shame to settle for a 15 minute registrar ceremony that could have happened absolutely anywhere and been for anyone.
Looking for an Asylum Chapel celebrant? Let's find each other.
I need to be honest, although I was lucky enough to be shown around the Asylum Chapel by the wonderful team there, I'm not currently one of their preferred celebrants but I'd absolutely love to change that.
In the meantime, I'm quietly hoping this page finds the couples who have already booked the Asylum Chapel and are now searching for a wedding celebrant who understands how to bring the space to life and hold their sacred and unique story at the centre.
Choosing your celebrant shouldn't simply be about finding someone who's available on your date. It should be about finding someone who understands the feeling you're trying to create. Perhaps you are a couple who value evocative storytelling, want more of a performance, or just want all the strands of your journey pulled together and celebrated.
If that’s you, ...I'd genuinely love to hear from you.
Whether you're still deciding between a celebrant and a registrar, wondering how to make your ceremony more personal, or simply looking for someone to tell your story with warmth, humour and a healthy amount of happy tears, I'd love to chat.
There's a little part of me that's hoping this blog finds exactly the right people, meanwhile happy planning.
