Tottington Manor: A Beautiful English Wedding Venue in the Sussex Countryside

There are some wedding venues where you can immediately picture the wedding before you've even been shown around.

Tottington Manor was one of those for me.

I recently had the pleasure of exhibiting there at one of their wedding open days, and after spending the day meeting couples, chatting with the Weddings Team and seeing the venue properly in action, I came away thinking that Tottington has something surprisingly difficult to find: it feels like a proper escape, without actually being miles away from anywhere.

Set at the foot of the South Downs National Park in West Sussex, with rolling countryside views and beautiful gardens surrounding it, Tottington has that very particular English countryside feeling so many couples are looking for. It's relaxed but still feels special, with the countryside, gardens, good food and champagne, without requiring half your guest list to navigate their way to the middle of nowhere.

And as someone based in Brighton and working across Sussex, London and beyond, I have to admit that combination is rather appealing.

A Sussex venue with the outdoors at its heart

I think Tottington will particularly appeal to couples who want their wedding to feel connected to the outdoors.

Perhaps you're dreaming of getting married outside with the South Downs behind you, or you love the idea of guests wandering through the gardens with a drink after the ceremony before everyone comes together for dinner.

There's something lovely about that indoor-outdoor flow here. The countryside isn't simply the view from the window; it becomes part of the experience.

And if the weather behaves itself, which in Sussex is obviously a contractual arrangement between you and the universe, there is plenty of opportunity to make the most of the gardens and views throughout the day.

An outdoor wedding ceremony with the South Downs behind you

This was one of my favourite things about Tottington.

The venue is licensed for both indoor and outdoor wedding ceremonies, so you can choose the South Downs Suite or take your vows outside with the countryside providing the backdrop. The outdoor ceremony areas can accommodate up to 180 guests, while the indoor ceremony space is licensed for up to 100.

There is something wonderfully simple about standing outside, looking across the Sussex countryside while the people you love sit in front of you.

The view is doing a fair amount of the work already.

For me, that's also where a celebrant-led ceremony can really come into its own. Rather than simply choosing a beautiful backdrop, we can create a ceremony that responds to the place you're actually in: bringing in music or readings that mean something to you, involving the people who matter and telling your story in a way that feels relaxed enough for the setting while still giving the moment the significance it deserves.

Because a countryside ceremony shouldn't feel like a registry office ceremony that happens to have a better view.

It should feel like your ceremony, in your place.

Why Tottington works beautifully for a celebrant ceremony

There is a lovely freedom to a venue like this. You can have the classic English countryside wedding if that's what you love, but you don't have to make it formal or traditional just because you've chosen a country setting.

Your ceremony can be funny, emotional, relaxed or wonderfully unconventional. You can involve your children, your best friend, your dog, your grandparents or the people who have been part of your relationship from the beginning. You can write your own vows, include a meaningful ritual, have live music or simply tell your story properly and let the words do the work.

That's what I love about celebrant ceremonies.

The venue gives us the setting. The two of you give us the story.

And Tottington gives us a rather beautiful setting to work with.

Everything you need for the celebration, all in one place

Tottington Manor isn't simply somewhere to hold the ceremony before heading elsewhere for the reception. Your wedding can unfold here from getting ready through to the ceremony, drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening celebration, with accommodation on site too.

There are 12 boutique bedrooms, including getting-ready spaces and a honeymoon suite, meaning your closest people can stay rather than disappearing in different directions at the end of the night. Some packages even begin the evening before, with a getting-ready suite and breakfast the following morning.

Food is another big part of the experience. The TERRA kitchen offers AA Rosette dining with a focus on locally sourced ingredients, and wedding packages include food and wine tasting.

It all feels very Sussex to me: good food, good wine, beautiful countryside and no need to make things more complicated than they need to be.

A wedding venue that works with local suppliers

One thing I particularly enjoyed about the wedding showcase was seeing how closely Tottington works with local wedding suppliers.

Florists, bridal suppliers, entertainment, celebrants and other specialists can come together around the venue, giving couples the opportunity to build much of their wedding with people who already understand the setting.

For couples, that can make planning considerably easier. Wedding planning is already a fairly sizeable project without becoming procurement managers overnight.

Having now worked alongside the events team myself, I can also say that I genuinely enjoy working with them. They're warm, approachable and clearly care about the experience they're creating for couples.

I think the best weddings happen when suppliers feel like a team rather than a collection of people who happen to be in the same building.

Is Tottington Manor the right Sussex wedding venue for you?

If you're looking for a South Downs wedding venue, an outdoor wedding venue in Sussex, or a country wedding venue near Brighton, Tottington is well worth seeing in person.

Especially if you want a wedding that feels relaxed, elegant and connected to the countryside, while still having all the practicalities of a proper wedding venue: accommodation, food, drinks, ceremony spaces, gardens and an experienced events team.

I left the wedding showcase having met some lovely couples, worked alongside brilliant local suppliers and spent a day getting to know a venue I can see being a really beautiful fit for the right kind of wedding.

The kind where everyone is outside with a drink in their hand, the South Downs are doing their thing in the background, someone is laughing far too loudly at a story they've heard three times before, and you're about to walk back inside to marry your favourite person.

Honestly, it all sounds and looks, pretty perfect to me.
